# We do insert a video into article / custom module in Joomla! ( little bit confuse you want to embed Youtube video or your own custom video ? )
# The point here is
You want display thumbnail image instead player .
( and in fact you asked : which software to do that )

So
# If this’s your custom video you’ll need generate thumbnail it.
Yes. You do not need do it manual, you can use ffmpeg as above my replied.
# if this’s youtube video. You can use their thumbnail provided.
