I am sure that this is VERY simple, but I cannot work out how to make main-left-right the default layout!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I solved it. You goto extensions > template manager > ja_ironis > Profiles > Default > set Desktop Layout (at Layouts setting) is main-left-right
