Hello I had the same problem even with todays version 1.1.8

The strange think is the following:
I make a quickstart installation. If I choose the corporate layout from standard menu it works.

I copy corporate template because I want to have multilingual site and make a new menu and a new category for my articles. I also make a new menu item pointing to the new category, similar to what
the quickstart guide has.

This is where the slideshow does not show the navigation and control.
I had to disable tinyMCE editor and enter manually missing code (navigation and control) to work.

Also in the same layout I cannot see the social fontawesome icons on the footer.

Follow this documentation for the slideshow .
Also, check the layout from template option and see which layout you are using because the slideshow position is not present in all type of layouts.
