This is driving me crazy, where and how do I configure the side columns to be either be visible or hidden in the section, category and article page views, I cant seem to figure it out.

Ok, finally got it. Done by configuring properties for modules and selecting which location on whatever pages you select, choosing to appear in side columns causes columns to become visible.
