Did you get this figured out. I’m a little confused by what you’re trying to edit about the main menu. The menu style can be changed in the first part of the index.php in the configuration area (it’s at the top, just read down and you’ll find it). The index.php is found in the file directory of the template (unzip template and it will be there).

Otherwise you should be able to edit the items listed on the menu from joomla – don’t need to mess with index.php.
