I have Joomla 1.7 in the root of my domain.
I need to password protect the whole site during development and easily remove the password protection once in production.

I was curious if anyone has used any script or techniques to do so.

I read and tried a technique using .htaccess and .htpassword
But it game me a 500 error after entering username and password.

    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Within your Global Configuration section of your site, simply designate –> Site Offline: “Yes”

You can then even type in a custom message that will appear. when anyone tries to bring up your site (without the access information). The access information – i.e. username/password – is the same you use to get into your site administration.
