It is indeed possible, but requires a few steps.

Step 1: go in to your template manager (Extensions -> Template Manager) and change the template to another template (temporarily)

Step 2: via FTP, rename the specific template folder to whatever you want. I’m assuming that you have already done the changes in the XML file

Step 3: go back to the template manager in your admin, and refresh the page. it should pick up the new template name now, so switch to that template.

That should be all that is needed.

Oh, you can rename of the template by rename the template folder and change the name in templateDetail.xml
