I want to have news on the frontpage display a thumbnail photo which will expand to regular size when the article is opened. Can someone please offer a solution to this problem.

You can use JA Thumbnail extension for article thumbnail image generation with various parametres.

Dear kobenes

Thanks for your help. I tried as you suggested. The thumbnail is generated and displayed with the article introduction, but when the whole article is viewed, the thumbnail continues to be displayed, but not the original large picture as required. The settings are herein provided for better clarity.

From Content Settings tab, you can choose Disable… Then for single article, JA Thumbnail will not generate thumbnail and your original image will be displayed.
