So how do I go about updating my site to the latest Joomla? When I tried, the site no longer showed up so I had to revert.

I need to update as my site has been hacked twice in the past month.

Hi
In this case first you need to check all 3rd party extension on your site , Are they ready for the latest Joomla ?
If not you have to disable them or use the compatible version of extension .

If you still face problem after update , kindly send me your test site super user login details with Admin path using Private reply , I will help you to check this bug .

Do not play wth your live sites . Always take backup of site before updating Joomla .
Also update All Extension and template before Joomla update .
