    Hi zorroh,

    And, I hope every template company will be persuaded to provide the equivalent of the QuickStart for the customers.

    When I was a member of GavickPRO last year, I asked whether they will provide a QuickStart — there was no interest to do so.

    The QuickStart kit is especially useful for beginners, but also those who install a lot of Joomla sites, like some developers.

    Just consider that there are more than 7,000 Joomlart customers, imagine how much time (and money is saved, if all those total time spent is monetized). Add all the other users of templates from other companies — the total time and money involved become more significant..

    Because of the above, at some point, I may send an email to various Joomla template complate companies and inquire whether they provide such kits.

    Hi mfcphil,

    Do you still use Joomla 1.0.x? In Joomla 1.5.x-Joomlart templates, for example Teline II, if you check the index.php via FTP:

    templates => ja_teline_ii (or whatever template you use) => index.php

    you will find in the “head” section:

    <blockquote>
    <head>

    <!–> <= I think that should be IE 8
    <link href=”<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl(); ?>/css/ie8.css” rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” />
    <!–>

    </head>
    </blockquote>

    there is a corresponding css also:

    templates => ja_teline_ii (or whatever template you use) => css => ie8.css

    I am not sure if the above will work with Joomla 1.0.x, but I do not see why not.

    One odd thing though is that the ie8.css is not called for in the index.php, just like the other css files. I am not an expert on the matter so I cannot state categorically whether this was an omission error, or the ie8.css was called elsewhere, which is rather doubtful.

    Yes still with 1.0

    But there are many many people who have had websites made for them who will still be using the older 1.0 version.

    I’m about ready to sack my server and find a new one so I can get the update.

    Will the code from the 1.5 head work in the 1.0 template php file

    I cannot recommend http://www.bytemark.co.uk highly enough Phil. It may be a little more complex than you are used to but their support is absolutely top notch. I’ve never had to wait more than 3hrs for a response even on a Sunday.

    Well I tried the code from the Edenite 1.5 index php file and removed the <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=7″ /> code that I had in and it sent things out of sinc, so I’m guessing it did not work.

    Removed it and put the <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=7″ /> code back into the head and all is well, so I’ll stick with this until JA or IE8 come up with something that works.

    Remember the code that works only shows the site as it looks in IE7, bit silly really, why would you need to upgrade if eveyone site look the same :confused:

    Phil,

    Do you use their dedicated servers, or the virtual?

    The virtual is kind of expensive, for the features provided. On the other hand, if the dedicated servers are fully managed (including providing all the technical support rather than just machine support), they are reasonable.

    Bandwidth though is kind of low. They have more generous bandwidth here in the US, for dedicated servers. Not that I will exceed, 1500 Gb, but it is safe to have some higher ceiling.

    I am not too familiar with server technology. How do the ones used Atom 333 (dual core), Athlon, and Phenom, in the dedicated servers of bytemark, compare with Celeron 2.0GHz, Dual Xeon 2.8GHz and Dual Core 5405 Harpertown. I think the Celeron is old technology that is why my hosting service is offering a bargain for them, right now.

    I use their virtual servers. Wile it may seem expensive in the US it is very well priced for the UK. On the £15 per month service which I have one setup there are 17 sites running smoothly and some of the are quite busy. I also have 2 other v-hosts with them which are on bigger packages but they are paid for by my employer.

    What really makes it worth the money is the support. Yesterday I screwed up an update killing my email system. I phoned them and they fixed it and called me back within 20 minutes.

    On a Sunday evening at 21:11 one of my sites got hacked and a paypal phishing site installed but by 21:22 they had shut down my site and sent me a text informing me what had happened along with an email showing exactly where they had got in and what files to delete to fix it (it is up to me to delete the files as they do not wish to destroy any data). By 21:39 all was back up and running. You simply cannot get better support than that. They are in a league of their own.

    Now compare that to services I have had from1&1 or Lycos in the past where for a similar cost you get an average response time of a week and are limited to one site per fee and it really looks good.

    As for the processors it is not usually the bottleneck where sites are concerned. While some processes are processor intensive you rarely get a web server where the processor is pushed anywhere near its limit. Available memory is more likely to be the thing slowing down a site.

    Phil,

    There are just no reliable review sites that I could trust. In fact, some of them are fronts of specific hosting services themselves.

    I have been looking for reliable hosting services for many years now. There are good and not so good with my current hosting service — and mainly for their technical support. And, as I indicated in the previous post the bandwidth are quite good and the diskspace is very reasonable also but not like the hosting service you mentioned.

    The a number reasons why I am looking for hosting services outside of the US:

    1. since the September 11, 2001 incident the rules for hosting services have been murky
    2. #sites can technically be closed down arbitrarily, if a company or outside groups objected to contents
      #the hosting company decided to do so for any reason at all

    3. because of the political clout of conservatives and religious groups here, the US has become a country of prudes
    4. #I do not have x-rated sites, but if you have an arts site, even Renaissance images would be considered a violation of the “nude” policies of most hosting services here
      #again, for reasons indicated in the previous, anyone “pressure” group could exert their power to close down a site.

    I have been to Europe several times, and follow the EU policies, including having a general grasp of the EU constitution. Before the current economic policies, I was quite impressed how the EU has caused member countries to change for the better, in many ways. The alliance seemed to be tested by the economic crisis, but I hope when this crisis is over, the impact of EU in uniting European countries, for the better, will resume.

    Alternatives to the US, from Europe, Asia and other parts of the world would be healthy in a more global community.

    While the US is a vibrant society and has many positives, when it comes to socio-cultural policies, I felt like I live in a “police state” especially during the Bush era.

    The Obama administration has made changes that are promising but because of the clout of the forces I stated above, it is unlikely that Obama could make much dent.

    I consider the EU to be more conducive in regard free speech and in terms of socio-political policies. that was why I have been looking for hosting services in Europe to serve potentially as mirror hosting service. I have been trying to find one in the Scandinavian countries but I really have no basis to evaluate in great depth how the policies are there, when it comes to hosting services, and how each country regulates them.

    One of the reasons why I am interested with the creation of a Collaborative Support Group (CSG) is due to issues related to hosting services and their policies.

    It would be good to have more objective information, that could be even put to periodic evaluations, about reliable sources of hosting services. I got some leads from other people too, but however reliablee they might be, they are still anecdotal.

    This issue, and related issues are beyond the scope of Joomla or Joomlart.

    What a Collaborative Support Group (CSG) could do is to serve as a “Consumer Report” arm of website creators to archive potential hosting services, perform more thorough analysis of the services and policies, and regularly evaluate the performance of those hosting services used by members. I do not know any reliable source of such information right now.

    Sorry I dont get it !!! The Teline II in the download area is dated to 2008. I did install my site in early 2009 before the upgrade and fix for IE8 so I have to upgrade mine now. But where do I find the new fixed files and a log of changes?

    PLEASE PLEASE this way of communicating with customer is BAD BAD BAD. You will lose customer and get reputation.

    Please would someone give me a brief on what to do to upgrade my template to fix the IE8 issue? Which files do I have to change and codes?

    This host really looks good, besides all the junk where you never know where they are, who they are, what they can, this one even provides company profile, profiles of the specialists and so on. When they also offer service to non UK companies or persons, I will see how competive they are for real, mostly I am tired of 36 month minimum agreements and monthly costs of app. 100$ for a good dedicated server.
