Can anyone tell me how to change ot from the default grey to white?

It’s a image you need to change, do a search in the images folder for mainwrap-bg1,thats the image you need to edit or set the background to #ffffff, there is also a image called mainwrap-bg2 which you can change to white too.

Thanks for that, Is it possible to hide the column if no modules are published on it?

It should hide automatic if you dont have a module published there?
