I have attached a file here which you can replace with the file that is default for the Virtuemart.
Remember to take a backup of the files before replace them and make sure you check that the file match and have this text at top:

/**
* Main CSS file for the "default" theme for VirtueMart
* @copyright 2006 Soeren Eberhardt, Anne-Katrin Merz
* @license GNU/GPL
*
*/

I am also having this problem as well, but i am using virtuemart 1.1 and Joomla 1.53 and this fix seems to apply to version 1.0 of virtuemart

in new version that file is called as theme.css
if there were 601 lines in cssvirtuemart.css then theme.css contains 501 lines
but when i see the CSS step by step i see many things changed

for example the file you sent me has got>>>>
}
.addtocart_button {
background: url( “themes/default/images/add-to-cart_blue.gif” ) no-repeat center transparent;
}
.notify_button {
background: url( “themes/default/images/notify_blue.gif” ) no-repeat center transparent;
}

Hope this detail helps and you can help me solve this problem on our 1.1 installation.
