Unread messages issue still not resolved

I followed the directions on this thread to set the inactive days from 1 to 90, but my users are still getting daily messages that they have unread messages - even if they do not have unread messages. How do I stop this???

Kindly check my suggestion here if you want to stop the notification of chat.
If user not open his account and unread chat it send notification.
You take a backup of cron.php file and remove the code from line 1791 to 1854 .
I will share the feedback to concern team to add some kind of option on backend to control it.

Ninja I changed the value from 1 to 90, but people still are getting notices every day. They are getting angry and threatening to leave my site. I have had to completely disable messaging.

The suggestion is to disable the notification it as it sent via cron.
When the cron command is run the code will execute to send the message to user who has unread messages.

Where is the cron file that has to be edited?
I'm with latest version and I want to disable the emails notifying of unread messages

You can disable it from Jomsocial backend > configuration > Message/chat > Notification for unread message.
