Is it possible to change the main menu from horizontal to vertical? Iif I just switched the horizontal menu off and used left sidebar instead, it behaved erratically – disappeared on narrower screens etc.

If you want to use the horizontal menu, you can use the menu module to load a menu you want to show. Then you assign that module to all pages or some pages you want. With the issue you mentioned, I think you need to check the assignment tab in the back-end of menu module.

It would be best if you can post your live site here, I can have a closer look to give better help.
