JA Slide Show Module does not work with any type of “Optimize JS” except “NO”
code is present, but the slides do not show
is this normal?

It depends on what else you have installed. Certain scripts will not play nicely if you have any type of JS optimization installed. Depending on what the other scripts you have running on your page you may be able to exclude them from the optimization.
