    i think until IE8 becomes stable and is released to the public – it wouldn’t be worth developing templates for it as I’ve had experiences where certain designs looked fine in IE7 Beta 1 etc and then completely broke the design when the final was released (even though I had not made any changes to my design code!)

    But it’s always worth keeping an eye on the scene and making sure everything is in place for the release of IE8

    Of course they shouldn’t panic about it however many are saying how well IE8 has moved to web standards and I doubt there will be much change with regards to how it handles CSS and Javascript.

    My intention of the post was not to freak everyone out but just a statement that the Joomlart team should be thinking about it pretty shortly.

    I dont have a lot of time to do a whole heap of screen captures however there are some things I cant show in a screen capture..like menus not working at all etc. Every site on the demo site that I have looked at has some problems, some bigger than others….I’m sure almost every web designer/developer will have the same issues..I was just hoping we would have a heads up and be ready for it..Here is a few

    Hmmm…..must be another Microsoft Corp conspiricy to make it not work on thier browser and to get everyone to use their version of CMS, Dot Net Nuke instead! 😉
    Just kidding! However they, (Microsoft) should be worried about Joomla….because Joomla rocks! Hopefully the non-Beta version will be just fine…

    I must agree with above, and that is one reason why I am on Linux. But, try to explain that to 90% of people who are using IE, instead of FF, for example. 😉

    I just found more information, this may be very important

    The Good:

    Microsoft will be releasing Internet Explorer 8 to render content in its most standards-compliant way by default. Giving top priority to Web standards interoperability will help web developers and designers drive toward the ideal of “write once, run anywhere”, freeing up more time to innovate rather than modify content for different browsers. This commitment also addresses several development and design pain points from previous Internet Explorer releases.

    The Bad:

    Browsing with the default new settings in IE8 may cause content written for previous versions of Internet Explorer to display differently than intended. This creates a call to action for site owners to ensure their content will continue to display seamlessly in Internet Explorer 8. As such, we have provided a meta-tag usable on a per-page or per-site level to maintain backwards compatibility with Internet Explorer 7.

    Adding this tag instructs Internet Explorer 8 to render content like it did in Internet Explorer 7, without requiring any additional changes. Note that in most cases, the immediate workaround can be as simple as embedding the following HTML tag into the top of the HEAD element of your web pages:

    <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=7″>

    can we get joomlart to test this and make sure it will work

    Revision :5.0

    Beta Information
    This article discusses a beta release of a Microsoft product. The information in this article is provided as-is and is subject to change without notice.

    No formal product support is available from Microsoft for this beta product. For information about how to obtain support for a beta release, see the documentation that is included with the beta product files, or check the Web location where you downloaded the release.

    SYMPTOMS
    You may experience one of the following issues when you use the Beta 1 version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8:

    • Misaligned Web page layout
    • Overlapping text or images
    • JavaScript functionality issues and errors

    CAUSE
    These issues occur because Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 displays Web pages using its latest “Standards mode” by default, whereas most current Web pages are created and tested to work with Internet Explorer 7 Standards mode.

    To confirm that browsing in Internet Explorer 8 Standards mode is the cause of an issue, follow these steps:

    1.Open Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1.

    Note If you do not have Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 installed, you can download it from the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie8/getitnow.mspx

    2.Click Emulate IE 7 on the menu bar, and then close the Internet Explorer browser window.
    3.Open Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, verify that the Emulate IE 7 button is depressed, and then visit the affected Web site.
    4.Make sure that the affected Web site is now displayed correctly.
    5.Click Emulate IE 7 to disable Internet Explorer 7 emulation, and then close the Internet Explorer browser window.
    6.Open Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, and then visit the affected Web site to confirm that you experience the issues again after disabling Internet Explorer 7 emulation.

    RESOLUTION
    To resolve these issues, Web site owners and administrators can add a meta-tag that tells Internet Explorer 8 to display an entire site or a specific page like Internet Explorer 7. That is, the meta-tag causes Internet Explorer to render pages in either Internet Explorer 7 Standards (Strict) mode or in Internet Explorer 5 (Quirks) mode, based on the Doctype element declaration.

    Note Adding the Internet Explorer 7 compatibility tag should address most display issues. However, browser detection may also have to be updated on your site. To learn more, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie8/readiness/DevelopersExisting.htm

    You can use one of the following options to force Internet Explorer 8 to render Web pages like Internet Explorer 7:

    •Per-site basis
    Site owners and administrators can include the following custom HTTP header to force Internet Explorer 8 to render Web pages like Internet Explorer 7:

    X-UA-Compatible: IE=EmulateIE7
    To add a custom HTTP response header at the Web site level in Internet Information Services 7 on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, follow these steps:
    1.Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
    2.Under Connections, double-click the server that you want, and then double-click Sites.
    3.Click the Web site where you want to add the custom HTTP response header.
    4.Under Web site name Home, double-click HTTP Response Headers in the IIS section.

    Note In this step, Web site name is the name of the Web site.
    5.Under Actions, click Add.
    6.In the Name box, type X-UA-Compatible.
    7.In the Value box, type IE=EmulateIE7.
    8.Click OK.

    To add a custom HTTP response header at the Web site level in Internet Information Services 6 and earlier versions, follow these steps:
    1.Click Start, click Run, type inetmgr.exe, and then click OK.
    2.Expand the server that you want, and then expand Web Sites.
    3.Right-click the Web site that you want, and then click Properties.
    4.Under Custom HTTP headers, click Add.
    5.In the Custom header name box, type X-UA-Compatible.
    6.In the Custom header value box, type IE=EmulateIE7.
    7.Click OK two times.

    •Per-page basis
    Site owners and administrators can include the following special HTML tag after the <Head> tag on the page:

    <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″ />

    The following example shows use of this Internet Explorer 7 compatibility mode tag on a per-page basis:
    <html>
    <head>
    <!– Use IE7 mode –>
    <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″ />
    <title>My Web Page</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>Content goes here.</p>
    </body>
    </html>

    •Testing your site with the meta-tag

    To verify you have installed the tag correctly on your site, follow these steps:
    1.If you do not have Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 installed, you can download it from the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie8/getitnow.mspx

    2.Download the Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 security update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 951804. This update adds support for the IE=EmulateIE7 tag.

    For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 951804 MS08-031: Security update for Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1

    For more information about the EmulateIE7 tag, visit the IEBlog Web site:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/06/10/introducing-ie-emulateie7.aspx

    3.Browse your site in Internet Explorer 8 Standards mode and verify you do not encounter issues described in the “Symptoms” section.

    •End Users
    Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 end-users can work around these issues by pressing Emulate IE7 on the menu bar in the browser window. When the Emulate IE7 button is depressed, Web pages will display in Internet Explorer 7 Standards mode.

    This problem is occuring right now with IE 7 with computer setting display at 600×800 pixels. I just upgraded from IE6 to IE 7 last week and noticed it. I’d show you my screen shots but I can’t insert them anymore, but you can try it with the two moniter display settings.

    no the ie6/ie7 problem is a pre existing problem,

    IE8 which is released only in beta presents a completely new set of problems which are going to complicate things even more

    ok, maybe it’s a dumb question, but does JA update all their templates if a major release of one of the big contenders in browser business emerges (like mentioned IE8), or only the most popular templates or maybe none? i’m asking because there are some very nice older templates that would be perfect if they worked flawlessly in newever browsers.

    mj1256 Friend
    #260534

    thats the issue we were trying to address.

    as IE8 uses different standards, there is the high probability that most sites , not just JA, most almost everyones sites will cease to render correctly. So they will need to fix all the templates as they currently do not render correctly in IE8 beta.

    the new backwards compatibility tag hopefully will be all we need,

    Is someone at JA testing this out??
