I have downloaded the special ready made layout and I would now like to change it. Please explain the steps in doing so.

Could u clarify it with some more details about layout ?
You can create K2 filter override in your template /html folder . You May look in JA DIRECTORY Template that comes with special design of K2 and JA K2 search filters .
