Is there a way to incorporate the dropdown search and login in Purity III as in some of the other templates (i.e. obelisk)?

There is always a way – though it will require taking a look at the relative files (both php and CSS) for that function in JA Obelisk and trying to transpose them into your JA Purity III based site. It CAN be done … it’s just going to take a bit of research, patience and trial-and-error.

I realize there is always a way 🙂
I guess I was asking if the other templates use JA extensions to incorporate those features that can be incorporated into JA Purity III. I’ll take a look at the code.

You mean the search and login module in the main menu http://prntscr.com/2pnaqx?

If so, you can easily add it via the setting in mega menu (Backend > Extensions > Template manager > select a Style > Mega menu. As can be seen in this screenshot: http://prntscr.com/2pnb9g, the Smart Search, Advanced search, Tags page, etc.. are simply sub menu items of menu item named Other page. Megamenu in new T3 framework supports the feature that allows you to add a module into a menu like Login module in this case.

Please have a look at this documentation for more information: http://t3-framework.org/documentation/bs3-configuration#megamenu-setting
