calling article from url line

How to I reach an article from the URL line of the browser.
https://www.mysite.com/pagename
I keep getting a 404 error.
I tried creating a menu that is not used to say what style should be used with the article, but only if the current menu had the article in the menu could I call the page.
try: www.jordanbleznick.com/j5a/landing.
I did find out using www.jordanbleznick.com/j5a/index.php/landing will work. I don't want to have the index.php necessary.

You can try to create a hidden menu item that links directly to your article, Joomla will then generate the correct SEF URL and /landing will load without needing index.php in the path.

You may also need to enable URL rewriting in Global configuration + have .htaccess file in root folder of your website.
