I have already figured this out. The rating-stars image file cannot be found in this path: /templates/ja_purity_iv/local/images/rating-stars.png.
The /local folder does not exist in my purity template directory.
When I create the folder /local/images and place the rating-star image file in it, the voting stars appear next to the articles.
However, the function that allows visitors to rate the article remains hidden.
