Custom 404 page in T4

How do I create a custom 404 page in T4 (blank template)?
I created an article with my design and a hidden menu item (no index, no follow) for the article. I need to insert that 404 page URL into the error.php file however T4 has two error.php files: error.php and error-t4.php. Which one do I work with and where do I insert my 404 page URL?

It's same with Joomla, you can edit the file: error.php and customize as you wish.

First of all, I can't bring up the T4's error page in my default install. Any URL error just returns to the home page.

In terms of locating where to place my 404 URL, neither the error.php file nor error-t4.php files in the T4 template folder have a place to insert the 404 url.

Could you point me to the line in either php file where that might go?
Should one insert the menu url: "index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=42", for example, or the page url, as in https://website name/page url?

Update:
I did get a generic 404 page when clicking an internal URL on my development site but have no idea which error.php file is serving that. If I type in any silly page name, however, I get returned to the homepage. No 404 error page.

As above, please point me to the line in either error.php file where I can insert either the menu URL, the alias, or the article URL (and how that should be formatted).

petri Could you try with error.php file of default Joomla template and see how it goes?

At your suggestion, I edited /templates/system/error.php.
After:
<?php defined('_JEXEC') or die;
I added:
if ($this->error->getCode() == '404') { header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found"); echo file_get_contents(JURI::root().'alias to my 404 article'); exit; }

petri Then the problem doesn't come from our T4 framework as it works in the same way with default Joomla. You can post the same topic in Joomla forum for help.
