Hi, I am John from JoomlArt. Welcome to our Joomla video tutorials series. Today we’ll talk about how to update the Joomla core and extensions to a new version.

Before upgrading, please take a full backup for your site as upgrading can be quite risky. So if something happens, you can always easily restore it.

We’ve split this video into 2 parts: Updating Joomla core and Updating extensions, let’s get started with updating Joomla core.

First, access your back-end panel, enter username and password. When a new version of Joomla is available to upgrade, you’ll get a notification here. Your current Joomla version is 3.2.0 and the latest version that you can upgrade to is version 3.3.3. You can simply click on “Update now” to update or you can go to “Component >> Joomla Update, then hit the “Options” button. There are multiple update servers you can choose from: Long term support, short term support, etc. If you select Custom URL update server, you have to add your own Custom URL. Keep the default settings for the Permissions. Now save the setting.

Before updating, you should Purge cache to ensure we don’t miss any other recent updates. Now select the installation method: Write files directly or write files using FTP, then hit the “Install the update” button. The process can take a little time - depending on the size of the update.

Now, let’s move to Extension updating. The built-in Joomla update can only update free extensions, that can be downloaded without authority or having to have an account.

Go to Extensions > Extension Manager, select “Update” menu. Here is where you will see list of extensions that have a new version available. Before updating, you should check all extensions then hit “Find Updates” to ensure that this is the latest version. Now select the extensions you want to update then hit the Update button. And then simply wait for the extension to be updated. Great, extension have updated successfully.
