Customization of JA Purity II for Joomla 2.5.x

Latest JAT3 Framework and JA Purity II for Joomla 2.5.

I used a previous version of JA Purity and must confess to hacking the template.css and a number of php files. I want to customise the latest JA Purity II template by using overrides. I've looked at the videos (boy, do those go fast!) and read the Wiki but I am stuck.

I can clone the profile and clone the default layout and set the clone profile desktop to the new layout. I can change the layout easily and there is lots of info on how to do this.

When I read the Wiki http://wiki.joomlart.com/wiki/File:J...-Structure.jpg and create a folder called local I can move the cloned profile and layout from the "etc" folder to the new folder (maintaining the folder sub-structure) but then the cloned profile and layout are no longer visible. So it looks like the "local" folder is deprecated to the extent that they must remain within the "etc" folder.

Where can I find the latest instructions/help to add custom layouts, stylesheets etc., that will be future-proof when updating the template? There is a lot of info out there but clearly much of it related to previous versions.
