I can open the WYSIWYG editor fine but all the little icons for the tools (like you see above in this editor) are missing. Just shows blank boxes with red X's.

what editor are you using? there are two preinstalled in joomla, have you selected one particular editor in your global settings area?
What version of Joomla are you running?

The default TinyMCE editor is chosen. I'm using version 1.0.12.

Please go here
http://www.cellardoor.za.net/
in the downloads section you will find the jce editor mambot
several utilities etc etc read the information on teh site download then install into Jooml a component mambot module whatever the item is etc then read all the insructions on how to use setup
it takes about 15 mins to become familiar with the editor the utilities etc but I think its well worth it
hope this makes a difference

I downloaded the file and installed it, and changed the editor in my Global settings. I still have the same look in the editor. . .nothing has changed. Any ideas? I appreciate your patience. . .I'm quite baffled!

I just noticed one other thing. When I open the editor page and watch the script that runs at the bottom of the page as things are loading, its still referencing TinyMCE. Its as if the other editor never took. I went back to that website and read that you also needed the component installed so I did that but still no difference. I've got to be missing something really obvious but I just can't figure it out.

You don't change the editor through the global settings alone...go to user manager pick yourself from the list and click on your name then you will see user editor (top right) change the editor there...
hope this helps ;)
