Greetings to everyone!

After more than 5 years of designing pages using GoLive and photoshop/fireworks, it seems I'm now hooked with joomla. Just got my first joomla site and was simply amazed with the quality of the templates here. I've been browsing a lot of template designs, including 2 other sites, where I also paid for membership. Drupal and Mambo did not convinced me to switch to a CMS, but joomla is simply the only CMS that matters.

What strikes me about joomlart is that the templates are in a class of its own. I'm now going gaga over 3 templates and will be using one of them for my new site. I'm using a template from another great club, but these 3- wistery, villadi and antares seems to be the perfect template for me.

I hope I can decide between the 3- my site is a film review and actors' website, so I wish to have both a minimalist and artistic look for it.

Just want to make my first post, for it seems we have a great and friendly bunch of peeps here! Hopefully when my joomla site is done, I can put a link here and have some of the experts comment and help me better it.

I'm 22, from Houston, TX but is now in the middle east for my first job!

Cheers!
Jed

Hi
Welcome!

When ShannonN is around things are a little more lively, but the rest of us are trying to keep up the pace until he returns.

I was designing sites with Dreamweaver and Photoshop since version 4, but I found myself spending too much time tweaking the sites graphics, so much so that I rarely got a site of my own published. That all changed when I descovered Joomla! Joomla and Joomlart have freed me from the endless cycle of tweaking and let me focus on the meat and potatoes of a website, the content.

I too am a member of that "other club" but I find that I use Joomlart templates more than the "other clubs" templates, simply because Joomlart templates are better.

I feel your joy, because I am now free myself. :D

Have fun!

Welcome aboard Jed!

Nice to see a new face here. We will sure try to do our best to give some "expert" comments when you put up your site. I have been working on websites for about 10 years now and Joomla is the only way I am designing pages now, no matter how easy/small a website a client wants, they do get the Joomla packages. Simply because it is easier than anyhting else!

Been using Dreamweaver, Photoshop, HTML templates, text editor and a lot of programs. Now I use Joomlancers, Joomlart and Joomla.org

LOL this is fun! I'm sure I'll get into the thick of things here....!

As for GoLive versus Dreamweaver, I used both, and I don't want to start a debate! :) coz I'm sure you know more of these softwares than me! :p m I think having to spend too much time with the coding convinced me finally to leave GoLive behind and put all the love on joomla!

- - -
Hi instantinlaw, thanks for the welcome! What you said about taking too much time on the codes is so true, now after I configure the template, I would be able to focus my energy on the content, and that's what matters now.

I read somewhere that for a website to maintain an audience, the content should be conversational, and later become a momentum site. The previous versions of my sites prevented me from having my audience participate,. thus I got limited features to offer them.

2 of them are quite popular but because its done with goLive and its slow in loading, I got lots of viewers looking for other similar sites. Joomla I think will take care of this.

As for the 'other club', I also enjoyed there, they also got a great bunch of peeps...but JA seems to be much cozier!

Hi Erik,

Norway rocks! My site is about film reviews and I'm in contact with the NFI, you got lots of great films and artists!

I also used joomlancer, one time, but it seems I got the 'wrong' developer to help me. The CB which I ask for a fix did not work and....>:(

Hi swemmel,

Another awesome place for cinema! The Netherlands that is!

- - -

Hey Shannon!

Thanks for the warm welcome as well. Yeah, this is a global forum- so much the better. Every voice should be heard, coz we can learn from each other as well!

I think I may need your help sometime coz your posts are such a great help here! I'm using wistery and your code to put it as left-main-right is just what I need!

Cheers!

Finally hey Mr. Moderator! Been to Sydney recently!!!!

Oh, my sites' artists are 50% from Australia- Luke Davies, Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett. When it comes to movies, Australia is #1!!!

Thanks a lot guys!

@Moviefan,

Yes, movies in Norway are sure picking up lately. 5 years ago we didn't have any movies. But lately there seems to be several movies "copied" from norwegian to Hollywood ( Insomnia, Veiviseren ( Pathfinder ) )

So, where are you from Moviefan? Think I missed your location... :p

Let me know when you are stopping by the Norwegian fjords and want a tour. I'll hook you up on a nice tour!

See that you are from TX. Ride on! :-) Go Bullhorns? Or something? Something horn I am sure...

Hey man,

thanks for the heads up. CSS is new territory for me, I'm angry with myself for being too stubborn to learn it and rely heavily on WYSIWYG, now I'm just catching up.

As for SEO, when I installed CB, it seems it has some issues with OpenSEF so now all the links are back to the machine-generated links. anyway, I'm sure its just a matter of browsing the forum for answers.

What I learned is to keep searching first before asking questions coz with a bunch of people here ready to lend a helping hand, I'm sure some of my questions have been discussed and solved already. :)

[Hi instantinlaw, thanks for the welcome! What you said about taking too much time on the codes is so true, now after I configure the template, I would be able to focus my energy on the content, and that's what matters now.

Yes Moviefan, Content is King, after the SEO stuff.:) Why, with a little help from my friend (who shall remain nameless) we will just call him Mr. S, and the free time Joomla and Joomlart has given me, I have been able to get my main site a Google page rank of 3, and some of my keywords are on the first page in search engin results, and all within about a month!

Hey Mr. S.... ur.. um.. I mean ShannonN, it's carts! But I'll forgive you, I know it's not easy trying to jam 2 weeks worth of missed posts into a single day:p :D Glad to see you back! And you read right, a page rank of 3! Wohoo... I know, I know, it's not a rank of 5 or 6 but hey, I need to save some good news for next month.

I tried to help out with support questions while you were gone, but MiCCAS, Erik, and Swemmel kept having to correct me. I guess it's a good thing they were here while you were gone, or I would have made a total mess out of this forum;)

Excellent news Bill! It's great to see results isn't it? But please tell the people that you had to spend a lot of time doing a lot of stuff behind teh scenes to achieve all the benefits of good SEO placements.

Hey! Everyone!!! Bill is an SEO expert lets request a Joomla SEO forum and Bill's the man!! we'll give him a shopping cart to placate him

Bill: Re ozcommerce carts, isn't there a bridge for Joomla, I'm sure I used ozcommerce with joomla before?

Cheers ShannonN

Yes, there sure is a bridge for osCommerce. Don't think it is free, it is one of these commercial bridges I think. Can't remember where I found it but a search on google would give you the answer I am sure...

Yes there is a bridge, but oscommerce has to run as a stand alone, or in a wrapper and I just don't like to use frames if I can get away without it.

There is also something called Jumi (http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1023/Itemid,35/) that looks like it could be used to intergrate oscommerce, or any other PHP application into Joomla without a wrapper. I have been meaning to look into it, but it requires a little bit of work to use, and If there is anything I hate more than work, its more work;)

I don't know why someone has'nt created a better intergration, but there is a fork of oscommerce and Joomla that Erik mentioned. It is not free though so being the cheap one that I am, I have not tried it.

ShannonN, I am no SEO expert, all I did was to follow some suggestions that you made. Yes it was and is a lot of work, but I guess nothing worthwhile is easy. :)

Hi Shannon,
I don't think this is the same one as the one I was talking about, but it looks pretty good. The only thing I don't like is the wrapper. I will save this link though and do some more reasearch to see id Jumi can intergrate it better. Thanks!

BTW what search engine do you use? I never seem to be able to find all the great stuff you come up with :D

Search engine? there is ONLY Google isn't there ?:D a search on the terms 'oscommerce joomla' seemed to do the trick, Bill.

I think somewhere else is a hack for the wrapper also I have some very nice free ozcommerce shopping cart templates to use that I found . . . . .
